A thalamotomy destroys a portion of the thalamus to relieve pain, epileptic seizures, involuntary tremors, rigidity of muscles, and emotional disturbances.

The scalp edges are highly vascular and require careful hemostasis. Plastic Raney clips are placed along the skin edges. Use of the ESU on the scalp area can cause tissue and hair follicle damage.
