Tissue must be handled gently during dissection, ligating, retractor placement, instrument placement and suturing. Tissue trauma and blood loss causes devitalization of tissue that cannot heal and necroses.

Absorbable gelatin (Gelfoam) is a hemostatic agent made from purified porcine gelatin solution. When it is placed on capillary bleeding, fibrin is deposited in the interstices and the sponge swells to form a clot. It may be used wet or dry.
