The handles of microinstruments should be long enough for comfort but must not extend beyond the working distance to contact the unsterile objective of the microscope. The maximum length is about 4 inches.

Powered instruments are used primarily for precision drilling, cutting, shaping, and beveling bone. They also may be used for skin grafts and to abrade skin. They have many moveable parts and need special handling and cleaning.
