Even with a mask on in the OR, personnel still can inhale vapors that escape from a facemask on a patient and gases such as nitrous oxide can be retained anywhere from 7 to 64 hours after administration of the drug. Health hazards from chronic exposure to anesthetic gas are spontaneous abortion and congenital abnormalities and neuropathy.
