Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

Bowlby and other attachment theorists believe that humans have a need for human contact and relationships. Attachment is the term used to describe the emotional bond between an infant/toddler and a caregiver. Bowlby described the infant/caregiver attachment as one that is persistent, involving a specific person who is not interchangeable with anyone else, emotionally significant, produces a desire to maintain proximity, and results in distress if there is involuntary separation. Melissa's clingy behavior suggests she is not securely attached to her mother. By attempting to stay very close to her mother Melissa demonstrates a type of insecure attachment referred to as anxious-avoidant. Anxious infants who are insecurely attached may develop feelings of incompetence. In addition, insecurely attached infants may have problems developing normal and healthy relationships later in life.
