The Linnaeus system divides all organisms into one of five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Plantae, Fungi, and
Animalia.
Woese and his colleagues proposed that life be divided into three domains with six kingdoms. The present
kingdoms of Animalia, Plantae, Protista, and Fungi; plus the kingdom Bacteria, which contains only the
kingdom by the same name, Bacteria; and the kingdom Archaea, which contains only the kingdom by the
same name, Archaea.
