Answer to Question 1

Pinching helps to force external parasites out of the hair follicle. A small sample of hair is
routinely plucked for a skin scrape as fungal elements have been known to adhere to the hair
follicle.

Answer to Question 2

Both aspiration and biopsy assist the veterinarian in diagnosis of skin diseases. Each
technique provides cells that can be examined by the pathologist or veterinarian. Unlike
aspiration, biopsy allows for histological examination of the tissue. Aspiration samples permit
cytological examination only.
