Answer to Question 1

Collection of a quality blood sample for coagulation studies requires a clean, atraumatic
technique. Inadvertent trauma to vessels or blood during collection will activate the clotting
cascade and induce platelet adhesion, thus rendering the sample useless. To minimize trauma,
a two-syringe technique is used. This technique involves collecting 1 cc of blood and then
exchanging syringes while the needle remains in the vessel. Once the second syringe has been
attached to the original needle, the sample is collected.
