Answer to Question 1

Bicultural means the ability to navigate between one's ethnic-minority culture and the majority culture. Is seen
as a protective factor against problem behavior (e.g., youth violence). Acculturation means you assimilate
into the majority culture and is associated with risk factors.

Answer to Question 2

Racial and ethnic identities both involve identification and emotional connection to a social group. The stages
of racial identity development proceed from pre-encounter through encounter and immersion to
internalization (commitment). Ethnic identity formation includes exploration, resolution (commitment) and
affirmation. Examples must be developmental appropriate for formal operational thinkers.
