The study Prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C among Homeless Persons with Co-occurring Severe Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders, found that bloodborne pathogens were strongly associated with substance abuse and injection drug use. Nearly 6 of the subjects were HIV positive, and nearly one third were positive for hepatitis.
