Self-help groups are created so that individuals facing a common difficulty can come together for support. Frequently used self-help groups in mental health include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). The leaders of self-help groups are generally individuals who have the same problem. Other self-help groups may focus on situations where a person is experiencing or has experienced a life threatening illness such as breast cancer.

A
The homeless have significant chronic medical conditions such as alcoholism, AIDs, and tuberculosis. Because many homeless individuals do not have a therapeutic relationship with a health care provider, the homeless individual may not receive the appropriate treatment. Tuberculosis is one disease that can be transferred to another because it is airborne.
