Residents in institutions (including nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, and prisons) were included. The first step in treatment of a client who is anorexic is nutritional rehabilitation. Adequate nutrition to stop starvation must be the top priority. In some cases, force-feeding may be necessary. Once adequate nutrition has been established, psychotherapy, maintenance, and finally, follow-up care can proceed.
