In sixth grade, 11-year-old Aalam starts to perform better on his math tests. His parents, both mathematicians, are relieved since they've been working with Aalam and playing number games with him since he was young. His teacher says he finally gets math. Use each of the following theories to explain Aalam's cognitive performance: Piaget's cognitive-developmental theory, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, and the information-processing perspective. Remember to use the terminology of each theory to describe the development taking place.

Answer to Question 1

Piaget's cognitive-developmental approach should include the ability to use concrete operations and the characteristic features that accompany this cognitive stage (e.g., decentration, reversibility). Sociocultural theory should emphasize the role of the parents, teacher, and culture, in providing Aalam with contexts that support mathematical learning (e.g., zones of proximal development, scaffolding, peer collaboration). Information-processing should emphasize the developmental components that encourage improved information processing such as short-term capacity, attention, automaticity, knowledge base, mnemonic, and metamemory development.
