An example of codependence is calling in to a spouse's work to report that he or she has the flu when he or she is sick from drugging. The spouse who calls the job is acting in the codependent role. Codependence is a term used to describe the cluster of behaviors exhibited by family members or significant others (most often a spouse) of one who is chemically addicted that serve to enable the alcoholic or addict to continue using the substance. Codependent behaviors serve to satisfy the needs of the family member to feel loved, important, and needed.
