The DSM-IV describes criteria for a diagnosis of Nicotine Withdrawal. This criteria includes, in addition to abrupt cessation:
 
  a. the use of nicotine more days than not
  b. daily use of nicotine for at least several weeks
  c. the use of at least two packs of cigarettes or its equivalent daily
  d. hourly cravings for nicotine

DSM-IV-TR describes the criteria for Nicotine Withdrawal as daily use of nicotine for at least several weeks. Other criteria include the abrupt cessation or reduction of use followed within 24 hours by four or more of the following symptoms: dysphoria or depression, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, decreased heart rate, increased appetite, or weight gain.
