A client with dementia is exhibiting behavioral problems. Every day at change of shift, the client paces up and down the halls, murmuring to himself. The behavior then escalates to screaming and rolling around on the floor.

By ignoring the behavior, the mother would implement a behavioral approach of extension. Extinction of undesirable behaviors is a result of withdrawal of attention from those behaviors. In this situation the behavior is the temper tantrum.
