Projection allows the client to disown negative feelings about self and see these feelings as being
directed at self from an outside source (the nurse). The client then can justifiably retaliate by being
hostile to the nurse. To realize that the client is accusing the nurse of his or her own faults makes the
criticism easier to manage without retaliation. The other options are not related to the dynamics of
critical behaviors on the part of the client.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
Talking with someone who can help the client focus on reality allows the client to interrupt the
stimulus to dissociate. Options A, B, and C foster detachment.
