Answer to Question 1

Ans: A
Feedback:
In a growth or self-help group, the leader and members have attained a certain degree of emotional stability, and there is not a great discrepancy between their functioning at the beginning and at the end of the experience. Toward the end the leader becomes part of the group. In the psychotherapy group, members or clients may have limiting, maladaptive, or severe emotional disorders. They may be referred to the group from individual therapy, where they were seen during an initial crisis but have progressed to tolerate a group setting. Clients do not become the therapist, and the therapist never assumes the client's role. The leader also provides more support for members who may have less tolerance for stress.

Answer to Question 2

Ans: B
Feedback:
Groups use latent and manifest communication. Latent content is not discussed, occurs on an emotional level, and seldom is verbalized (eg, hidden agendas). Manifest content involves spoken words. Groups are most effective when latent and manifest content are similar. The farther apart these levels of communication, the more the group experiences communication problems.
