The nurse was visiting the home of a family who care for an 18-year-old son with severe and per-sistent schizophrenia. The parents remarked, We never go anywhere alone and are thinking about taking a weekend trip.

  1. It has to be tough, but you surely do a good job with your son.
  2. Maybe you should leave for just a few hours to see your son's reaction.
  3. It may be difficult to find someone willing to stay in your home.

Most severely and persistently mentally ill clients live with their families. The other options list living arrangements for small parts of this group but not for the majority.
