The nurse entered the room of a client who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and found the client and her husband laughing loudly at old movies of The Three Stooges.

The nurse left the room and postponed a planned treatment, knowing that humor:
  1. Has no place in serious hospital situations
  2. Can foster positive changes on several physiological systems and functions
  3. Only serves to prolong the client's denial of the real situation
  4. May help the very young who are unaware of serious situations

Question 2

In the neighborhood clinic, the client listened as the RN described traditional medicine options that were available to treat his health problems. She did this in a balanced and neutral manner.

The client thanked the nurse and said he was going to continue treatment with acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine before doing any of the suggested treatments. The nurse told the client to carefully consider his choices, told him the staff was available if needed, and wished him good health. The nurse's response demonstrates:
  1. Superficial understanding of accepted traditional treatment modalities
  2. Lack of concern for the client's well-being
  3. Inability to confront the client about his inappropriate health choices
  4. Respect for the client's health care choices

Answer to Question 1

ANS: 2
Research has shown humor may have positive effects on cognitive ability, heart and respiratory rates, blood pressure, muscle tension, and pain. Option 1 is untrue; many clients use humor to help deal with difficult situations. Option 3 is untrue; many clients face difficult situations with the help of humor. Option 4: Age is not a specific factor affecting the benefits of humor.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: 4
After receiving all relevant, current information, clients have the right to make their own deci-sions about health care. This response shows respect for the client's right to make such a choice and the nurse's understanding of the philosophy of holistic nursing. 1. The response does not demonstrate superficial knowledge. 2. The nurse must remain objective and empathetic but may not interfere with the client's choices. 3. There is no need for confrontation.
