The nurse does not use self-disclosure foster a interdependent relationship that in any way gives support to the nurse. Empathy does not rely upon shared experiences.

ANS: D
Countertransference is an emotional response on the part of the nurse that is a result of cer-tain qualities in a specific patient. The response is dramatic, irrational, and inappropriate. The initial response would be for the nurse to engage in a self-assessment that focuses on why these feelings are occurring. It is true that the nurse needs to manage the situation but will need some guidance regarding how to accomplish that. If self-reflection isn't successful, then professional counseling would be the appropriate step. Changing the nurse's assignment is not an effective means of managing the problem because it is a situation that reoccurs in nursing practice.
