In Freud's personality structure, the ability to form mutually satisfying relationships is a fundamental function of the ego and is formed throughout a child's development. Defense mechanisms are coping styles that protect a person from unwanted anxiety. The unconscious refers to feelings and thoughts outside awareness and not remembered. The id is formed by unconscious desires, primitive instincts, and unstructured drives.
