Answer to Question 1

Ans: A
Although minimal information is available pertaining to cultural beliefs about suicide, nurses need to be aware of possible cultural influences. For example, suicide is forbidden under Islamic law and considered shameful in the Filipino culture. However, the suicide of elderly Eskimos who could no longer participate as productive members of a tribe was expected. Culturally sanctioned suicide has been practiced by the Japanese (hara-kiri) and Hindu widows (suttee).

Answer to Question 2

Ans: B
It is important to teach survivors of suicide and those with a family member who is suicidal that depression, or feelings of unhappiness, is most often associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The mentally ill group, or crazy people, is not the primary group that commits suicide, and individuals who are suicidal are not necessarily crazy.
