Response occurs within 30 to 60 seconds; however, it might not reverse associated respiratory depression. Because it has a short duration of action and does not speed metabolism of benzodiazepines, the nurse must be vigilant for signs that the patient is reverting to the pre-flumazenil state. Administration of flumazenil might need to be repeated several times.
