Brookss characters are aimless dropouts who pass their time in idle and destructive self-indulgence; they see no future for themselves, and they seem resigned to an empty existence of transient pleasures and early death. Heaneys characters are intense, inquisitive strivers, goal-oriented and focused on a future of achievement and reward.
