Answer to Question 1

  • What should be clear enough just from the descriptions within the text (as well as the larger historical context in which it was written) is made inescapable by the references to we Indians in line 21 and my tribe in the last line: the poem is addressed to those who are not Indians, to the larger American population, the descendants of those who came here and imposed themselves, their ways, and their rules on the ones who were already here.

Answer to Question 2

  • The difference, essentially, is the difference between death and life. In the first stanza the speaker speculates, briefly and impressionistically, on what it will be like to die. In the second he concentrates on his sense of what it is like to be alive, focusing on things that have thrilled, stirred, or outraged him, and concluding with an affirmation of his feeling of humility and awe at life itself.
