  • The tone is certainly more disillusioned than it is amused. Essentially, the speaker is clearly scornful of the wayfarer who so easily abandons his quest in the face of difficulty and complacently goes on his way.

  • That people in general quickly grow discouraged when they meet with obstacles on the path to truth, and just give up altogether. It is, in a way, the opposite of what many readers mistakenly see as the message of Robert Frosts The Road Not Taken.
