Answer to Question 1

  • Surprise ending l: Mrs. Mallard realizes that her husbands death has left her unexpectedly happy. Surprise ending 2: Her husband is still alive. Surprise ending 3: She dies herself. The Story of an Hour has been criticized for having a rigged ending that strikes some readers as a cheap trick. But the convention is used here not merely for its shock value but also to illuminate Mrs.

Mallards repressed resentment against her husband.

Answer to Question 2

  • Undoubtedly her grief is sincere. Caught within a conventional marriage, she has not realized the freedom she has been denied. Notice that her rush of new joy, her looking forward to a whole new life, begins when she observes that spring is bursting forth, too, in the natural world.
