Reptiles do not have a diaphragm to assist with respiration, but instead use intercostal muscle movement. There are periods of apnea.

Answer to Question 2

Common signs of respiratory difficulty include open mouth breathing, bubbles around the mouth, loud/raspy respiratory noises, abnormal postures, gaping.
