Avian lungs are rigid and lay flat against dorsal vertebrae and ribs. Birds have eight air sacs and no diaphragm. They are dependent upon breast muscles, keel bone, and ribs for respiration.

The jugular vein or the cranial vena cava provides a larger amount of blood The coccygeal vein of the tail is recommended when collecting blood in capillary tubes. The use of gas anesthesia is necessary in most cases to obtain a blood sample from these sites.
