Answer to Question 1

The three primary problems related to using manure as an organic fertilizer include:

1 . Manure causes a significant odor problem.
2 . Manure contains high levels of E. coli and other forms of bacteria that may be harmful to humans.
3 . Most raw manure contains a considerable amount of weed seed, which can germinate in the soil along with the crop.

Answer to Question 2

Composting works by placing leaves, grass clippings, and various other plant matter in a bin designed to hasten the decomposition process. As the plant material decays, it is converted into a substance called humus that not only contains nitrogen, but also aids in the water-holding and nutrient-holding capacity of the soil.
