Answer to Question 1

The first practice is to control the runoff from rainwater. Diversion ditches are cut into areas around livestock facilities to prevent runoff containing waste materials from getting into streams. Drainage ditches divert the runoff into holding areas where risk from runoff is at a minimum. The second practice is to use a lagoon as a holding tank for manure. Here, the material is decomposed through the use of anaerobic bacteria.

Answer to Question 2

A chemical's half-life is the amount of time it takes for half of the amount of the chemical to be eliminated through natural processes.
