Answer to Question 1

The Federal Forest Reserve Act was a law passed by Congress in 1891 that gave the president the power to set aside timberlands to be managed so that people in the future would have forests to use and enjoy.

Answer to Question 2

Forests benefit the environment in multiple ways, including:

1 . Absorbing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
2 . Releasing oxygen into the atmosphere
3 . Helping to keep water clean by preventing excessive runoff into lakes and streams
4 . Providing a habitat for animals and other plants
