Answer to Question 1

Animal welfare activists contend that knowledge gained through research cannot justify the suffering the animals must undergo to test a treatment or a new theory. They also argue that animals really have too little in common with humans to be used in research and that much of the research using animals could be done with computer models and cell cultures.
