When a specific gene from a virus is inserted into a peanut plant, for example, the resulting plant contains the virus gene in every cell. When the same type of virus tries to attack the plant, it comes into contact with a cell and gets the sense that the plant cell is already infected. As such, it withdraws, and the plant is protected.
