The follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), secreted by the pituitary gland, stimulates the ovary to produce a blister-like structure called a follicle. This follicle secretes estrogen, which acts as a messenger that stimulates the rest of the reproductive system to prepare for the reception of the egg. Progesterone, secreted by the corpus luteum, causes the walls of the uterus to thicken in preparation for receiving the fertilized egg.
