2 . acid, pressure, and heat treatment to break linkages between lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose; this step also degrades hemicellulose into a mixture of simple five carbon and six carbon sugars (xylose)
3 . cellulase conversion of the liberated cellulose to glucose
4 . fermentation to produce ethanol: glucose from cellulose by yeast to produce ethanol; xylose from hemicellulose by bacteria to produce ethanol
5 . distillation and concentration of the ethanol
