Answer to Question 1

Increased production of ethanol from corn to achieve a capacity goal of 15 billion gallons (57 billion liters) will require use of nearly all the corn produced in the United States. This will divert corn that is normally used for livestock and human food. Prices of meat, eggs, and corn products will increase. Also, there are concerns about the energy and water use efficiency of the corn-ethanol process. Finally, excessive corn production on agricultural landscapes will likely lead to high rates of soil erosion and increased nitrogen pollution of waterways.
