The land capabilities classification is a system for identifying and categorizing non-federal cropland throughout the United States that was created to describe the suitability of lands and soils for crop production. The classification system divides soil and landscapes into eight general categories, denoted by Roman numerals. Classes I to IV are suitable for crop production where classification depends upon where the landscape is located, slope, and fragility and depth of the soil. Classes V through VIII are not suitable for cropland but may be used for pasture, woodland, wildlife conservation, recreation, or beautification purposes.
