Answer to Question 1

Cotton requires a long growing season and warm temperatures. The southern United States has these ideal growing conditions.

Answer to Question 2

Peanuts gained popularity as a nutritious crop when the boll weevil destroyed much of the cotton crop of the South in the 1800s.
