Answer to Question 1

The characteristics of hydraulic fluids and air include: (1) Hydraulic fluids cannot be compressed and
air can be, and (2) hydraulic fluids must have complete circuits with fluid returning to a system
reservoir. Air can be pumped in from the atmosphere, used to move the components, and expelled out
into the atmosphere.

Answer to Question 2

Pascal's law refers to a pressure applied to a confined fluid that is transmitted undiminished to every
portion of the surface of the containing vessel. (Pressure on a liquid in a container is transferred
equally to all surfaces). The formula is P = F/A.
