The European Union has banned AGPs based on the view that AGPs are responsible, at least partially, for the development of antibiotic resistance.

For FDA approval, a drug or feed additive must demonstrate:

1 . Efficacy (how the drug or additive does what is being claimed)
2 . Safety to the animal
3 . Safety to the consumer for the animal product
