Answer to Question 2The new MyPlate nutrition initiative replaces the food pyramid. This new program was introduced by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2012, and it divides foods into five major food groups, which
represent the nutritional needs of the body. The five food groups are the following:
FruitsAny fruit or 100 percent fruit juice
VegetablesAny vegetable or 100 percent vegetable juice
GrainsFoods made from cereal grains: wheat, rice, oats, corn, barley, or other
Protein foodsSeafood, meat, poultry, beans, peas, eggs, processed soy products
DairyFluid milk and many foods made from milk that retain their calcium content
Calcium-fortified soymilk belongs to this food group; milk products with little or no calcium, such as
cream, cream cheese, or butter do not belong. Choices should be fat free or low fat.
