Answer to Question 1

Some seed coats are very hard, and water cannot penetrate to the endosperm. In these cases, it is
necessary to scarify the seed. A common way to scarify seed is to nick the seed coat with a knife or a
file. Another method is to soak the seeds in concentrated sulfuric acid.
