The process of splitting atoms to release their energy is called fission. During the fission process, heat is given
off, which is the important component in a nuclear power plant. The heat is used to turn liquid water into steam
which turns steam turbines to produce electricity.

Nuclear energy was discovered when Henri Becquerel found that when photographic plates were subjected to
radium, they became exposed, even though they were covered
