Embankment ponds have the water impounded behind an earth dam built across a water course. Excavated ponds
are made by digging a pit below the surrounding ground level.

Littoral zonethe shallow zone that contains rooted vegetation.
 Limnetic zonegoes from where the rooted vegetation no longer occurs to where light stops penetrating.
 Profundal zonethe bottom zone of the lake, essentially no light penetrates
