Introduction of contaminants from across a wide area with no identifiable location or locations. An example would
be fertilizer running into a stream along a broad area or animal feces washing into a stream from a large pasture

The direct introduction of contaminants into the water from an identifiable location or locations. Examples are
wastewater from a factory or drainage from a storm drain.
