The soils engineer analyzes and evaluates soils for construction sites, pond and lake sites, erosion-control construction,
and other soil and water conservation activities. The soils engineer must be able to evaluate the percolation
rates, compaction problems, drainage, structural weights, and the ability of the soil to support structures.

The number of jobs in this field may be growing slower than average for all occupationsabout 5 percent from
2010 to 2020.
