Provides a cementing effect.
 Is an important source of plant nutrients.
 Helps store soil water.
 Makes soil more tillable for farming.
 Provides food energy for soil microorganisms



Answer to Question 2

Original tissue is organic matter that is still recognizable. Humus is more completely decayed. The brown color of
some topsoil is a result of its humus content
