Answer to Question 1

When eating certain feeds, foaming may occur or a slime layer may build up in the rumen, preventing
the gases from escaping. This causes a swelling in the midsection.

Answer to Question 2

Buffers are added to feed to preserve a pH of 6.5 to 6.8 in the rumen.
